How We Got Started

The highlight of Barcelona Bath & Body Founder Rachel Lane’s 17-year sales and marketing career was director of marketing for an award-winning spa line of candles and bath products.  After leaving the spa industry to work in home decor, she caught a late-night Oprah rerun about “mompreneurs” in June of 2002 featuring Lisa Price of Carol’s Daughter. Though she’d really been missing the spa body care and home fragrance business terribly, she’d never even conceived of the possibility of starting her own company until this pivotal TV-induced ah-ha moment. Rachel’s dream was born to work her passion for home fragrance and personal care products and she immediately went to work on starting her own business. 
 
Rachel spent the next couple years in her “kitchen-turned-laboratory” developing healthy top-quality soy candles, rich moisturizing soaps and long-lasting room sprays in five sophisticated scents—Cinnamon Sandalwood, Grapefruit Ylang Ylang, Vanilla Lavender, Lemongrass Fennel and Coconut Bay Rum.  Signature clean-lined, elegant packaging is perfect for gift-giving and everyday use.
 
Barcelona Bath & Body debuted in 2005 at world trade center showrooms in Dallas, San Francisco and Seattle and is carried by fine boutiques around the world.  Though the business has outgrown her kitchen (much to her husband’s relief!), each product is still made lovingly by hand in small batches and customer satisfaction is the company’s hallmark. 

How We Got Our Name

Lots of people ask where the name Barcelona Bath & Body came from.  In the very beginning stages of conceptualizing the product line and naming it, Rachel kicked around hundreds of names.  She bounced many of them off her favorite sounding board—husband Barry Lane.  Many of the names included the word “spa,” but knowing that she desired a concept completely unique from her spa background, Barry voted against all of them.  Finally, at the end of her brainstorming rope, Rachel threw out a reference to an inside joke*—Barcelona Bath & Body.  They gaped at each other and agreed it really had a ring to it, they really liked it and after all, alliteration was on their side.  Combined with a long-standing admiration for the Mediterranean olive oil-centered beauty tradition, a passion for Mediterranean cuisine and a love of travel, it was the perfect name.
 
*Fellow British comedy fans may be familiar with Fawlty Towers, a sitcom that originally aired in 1975 and continues to run frequently on PBS and BBCA.  John Cleese’s character continually explains the English-as-second-language foibles of waiter Manuel to hotel guests with the one-size-fits-all exasperated phrase, “He’s from Barcelona.”

All of our products are handmade for you with care. If more than one week is needed to ship your order due to our production cycle, we'll let you know. Returns: Your satisfaction is our highest priority.  In the unlikely event of a manufacturing defect, notify us upon receipt and we will quickly work to evaluate your concern and replace the product.  Other returns of our handmade products will not be accepted.
